Legal Defense Fund

Legal Defense

One of the reasons that most of us belong to our local F.O.P.lodges is for legal defense coverage.  Whether the claim is administrative, criminal or civil we want to have the best legal defense available to protect our jobs and our family’s future.

The Colorado State Legal Defense Fund is the best offered statewide with over $1 million dollars at its disposal.  Its Board of Directors, Coordinators and Administrators are professional law enforcement personnel like yourselves.  They understand the law enforcement structure and the problems associated with it.

How Do I File A Claim?

Filing a claim with the LDF is as easy as picking up the phone.  With the exception of a critical incident, the member in need of assistance need only call the coordinator assigned to their lodge and briefly explain the circumstances surrounding the request.  The explanation of the claim determines if the factual basis for the claim falls under the terms and conditions of the LDF.  Once the coordinator determines that the case falls within the guidelines, you are given the name and number of a plan-approved attorney to contact.  It’s as simple as that. If you’re involved in a critical incident, however, you may call one of the plan's attorney’s listed on your membership card for immediate assistance. You MUST be a member in good standing with Lodge 27 in order for the LDF to cover your claim. Members who's dues are not current or who have transferred to another lodge and not yet filed paperwork to transfer coverage may find themselves without LDF coverage at the time of a critical incident. Make sure you keep your dues and paperwork current in the event LDF coverage is needed!
